WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Water Polo team came away with their fourth Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) victory Saturday morning cruising past Occidental College 13-4 at the Slade Aquatic Center.

The Purple & Gold are currently on cruise control winning seven of their last eight as they move to 8-4, 4-1 SCIAC.

It was a slow start for the Poets despite getting a number of opportunities.  They only put up two goals over the first eight minutes from Teresa Marchetti (Messina, Italy) and Roni Ramirez (La Habra, Calif.) but then pulled away in the second outscoring the Tigers 4-1.  During the period Jacqueline Au (Los Angeles, Calif.), Emma Romero (El Segundo, Calif.), Anastacia Gonzalez (Montebello, Calif.), and Taylor Kleinert (Lodi, Calif.) all found the back of the goal giving WC a 6-2 lead at the break.

Another four goal period in the 3rd, stretched the margin to six thanks to Marchetti, Sawyer Bellville (Chino, Calif.), and Kleinert.  Then in the 4th, Whittier added insurance with Ramirez, Marchetti, and Marina Daroca Bazan (Barcelona, Spain) all connecting that put the game out of reach.

The Poets outshot Oxy 32-24 and was 3-for-9 on power-plays.  Defensively Whittier was tough holding the Tigers to 0-for-10 shooting on power-plays.

Behind the pressure was Gonzalez with three steals and Ramirez with another two.  Between the posts, Tahlia Pou (Stockton, Calif.) got the start and added two saves and a pick.  Lauren Tapia (Whittier, Calif.) came in relief and played the final 19:56 registering seven stops.

Marchetti added three goals and an assist for the game and was joined by Kleinert, Bellville, and Ramirez who each added two apiece.  Bellville also had two dimes and a steal.

Whittier returns to the pool this Wednesday, March 20 as they travel to Chapman University to take on the Panthers.  Game time set for 11:00am.
