IRVINE, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's & Women's Cross Country teams opened 2018 at the Vanguard Invitational Saturday morning with the men finishing 5th and the women 3rd

Sophomore Benjamin White (La Habra Heights, Calif.) led the Purple & Gold winning the Invite placing first of 49 competitors with a time of 25:46 (5:11 min/mile) for the hilly Irvine Regional Park 5-mile course.  He placed nearly a full minute ahead of the 2nd place finisher, breaking away soon after the first mile and never looking back.

The next Poet finisher was freshman Ricardo Lira-Martinez (Bassett, Calif.) (30:23) in 32nd with Benjamin Arrendondo (Sylmar, Calif.) (31:58) and Maxwell Koszowski (Denver, CO) (32:48) going 39th and 40th.   

A trio of Poets led the women to a 3rd place finish against the same six team contingent of NAIA and DII opponents.  Senior Anahy Covarrubias (Los Angeles, Calif.) (15th) was followed closely by freshmen Jeanie Cox (Chino Hills, Calif.) (17th) and Eliana Garcia (Pomona, Calif.) (18th). 

Whittier has two weeks of preparations now for the Mustang Challenge, set to take place on Saturday, September 29 in Santa Clarita, Calif. at Central Park.
